 International Cooperation

Cooperation with international organisations (IAEA, HERCA, etc.), EC and foreign radiation protection regulators, participation in international committees and groups (ESOREX, WHO BioDoseNet and RENEB).

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) - The International Atomic Energy  Agency is the world's central intergovernmental forum for scientific and  technical co-operation in the nuclear field. It works for the safe, secure IAEA. Participation in the IAEA’s 67th General Conference, other international conferences, regional training courses, workshops and meetings. Lithuania was also represented in Safety Standards Committees:

  • Radiation Protection Standards Committee (RASSC). RSC experts participated in the Committee’s activities and provided comments and suggestions on standards being developed by the IAEA.
  • Emergency Preparedness and Response Standards Committee (EPReSC). It examined and commented on draft IAEA safety standards for nuclear and radiological emergency preparedness.
  • Transport Safety Standards Committee (TRANSSC). RSC specialists participated in the Committee meetings, provided comments together with representatives of other countries, improved the draft IAEA documents regulating the transport of radioactive materials, analysed comments from representatives of Member States, and addressed other issues related to the international transport of radioactive materials.

👉 EC. Summary data on radioactive releases from Ignalina NPP in 2023 are presented in accordance with the Outline of the Procedure for the Preparation and Submission of Information and Reports related to the Implementation of EU Environmental Legislation to the EC, the European Chemicals Agency and the European Environment Agency. More than 80 data on releases to the environment (water and air) of various radionuclides were provided. The EC has produced and published a report on Environmental Radioactivity in the European Union 2015–2020, which also includes data on the monitoring of Lithuania’s radiological environment.

👉 EC Euratom Treaty Article 31 Expert Group.  RSC experts participated in the expert group meetings and discussed with representatives of other countries on topical radiation protection issues and made proposals to strengthen radiation protection in their respective areas.

👉 EC Euratom Treaty Article 35-36 Expert Group. Participation in the Expert Group on Articles 35-36 of the Euratom Treaty. Information on the organisation of environmental radiological monitoring, EC inspections of Member States, comparative studies and other issues was provided to the Expert Group and disseminated to Lithuanian specialists.

👉 EU Science Centre Joint Research Centre. In accordance with the provisions of Article 36 of the Euratom Treaty, data on national radiological environmental monitoring have been provided for the REM (Radioactivity Environmental Monitoring) data dashboard, which is managed by the Joint Research Centre of the EU Science Centre.
